Continued from above.
Fashion merchandisers work closely with retailers and salespeople, educating them about the clothing line, choosing the right retailers for a particular line of clothing, and working to promote a variety of brands. To become successful in the field of fashion merchandising, you'll need a lot more than just an eye for fashionable trends. You'll need a well-rounded education in the elements of fashion design, clothing manufacturing, textiles and retailing. As your job is to know the clothes you sell, you'll have to be prepared to answer retailers' questions about the fabric, makeup, manufacturing process, care of the garment, and various styles, colors and options.

A successful fashion merchandising professional is responsible for anticipating and predicting consumer demands for both new and already-established brands. This means you'll need to learn how to recognize and communicate to your target market, and work with retailers and marketers to create effective marketing plans to reach your desired group. You will also be responsible for knowing the time involved in manufacturing garments, how long it will take to bring them to market, and order the right amount, so retailers aren't left with empty shelves, or an enormous oversupply of clothing they won't be able to sell.
