As a member of a culinary team you might find yourself in one of a variety of jobs. Captain of the ship is the Head or Executive Chef who is responsible for managing the kitchen staff, for placing supply orders, and often for the design of menus. Chefs and cooks prepare meals, usually working from recipes, and use many different ingredients and utensils to create the finished dish. Other staff support and assist the chefs by preparing ingredients for cooking, going for pots pans and other utensils, and making sure that everything in the kitchen area is kept bright and clean. Workers in the culinary arts can be found in many types of establishment. Restaurants, hotels, short order and fast food outlets, educational and commercial cafeterias, among others. The career opportunities for those with a culinary degree are extensive.

While experience on-the-job is important, competition for the best jobs is strong and if you want to make good career for yourself then you will benefit from studying a culinary arts program, either at a college or vocational school. Training for a culinary career is generally accomplished by a combination of class-based course work with on-the-job experience leading to certification, and prospects for skilled chefs and cooks should remain good.
