If you are considering further career training to advance your career opportunities, you will have a number of important choices to make: the degree, mode of study and perhaps most important of all, the subject you wish to study. When choosing to further or change your career with career training, you need to ensure you match your degree with your career choice.

Find out the degree level you need to enter your chosen career. Do you need a two-year associate degree or four-year bachelor’s degree? Perhaps you need postgraduate qualifications: master’s degree programs are generally one- or two-year programs following the completion of a bachelor’s degree. A doctoral program requires at least three years’ additional study beyond a master’s or bachelor’s degree.

A range of different full and part time study options are available to make getting your career training as easy as possible. Some programs will be entirely classroom based, with classes being held during weekdays, the evenings or weekends. Programs may be available entirely online, or may use a combination of online and classroom teaching.

When choosing the type of career training, don’t be fooled by degree program titles: programs with the same name can vary widely in content. So check degree program content to ensure it is oriented towards you career choice. Find out what your career accreditation requirements are and consider whether your career training prepares you for state licensure. Professional bodies or state licensing authorities may require specific subject combinations. If you intend to study beyond associate degree level training, inquire about credit transfer from one program to the next.

Career training can give your career the boost it needs. The Career and Education Directory is your doorway to the schools, education and training you need.
