There are many factors you should take into account when doing career research. A major consideration is the qualifications required, along with the number of years’ study needed to get those qualifications. Find out the type of working environment offered by different careers: office, workshop or outside. Are jobs available locally or will you have to relocate? Will you be expected to travel regularly? Pay, benefits and working hours are obviously also important, as well as the potential long-term career prospects.

A range of issues can impact upon the job market, such as the state of the economy at local, national and global level. Tastes and fashion also play a role: careers which become popular can result in fierce competition for entry level jobs. New technology can create new jobs overnight. Changes in legislation may result in changes to licensing or qualification requirements. These are all important items to consider and watch for while conducting career research.

So how can you determine whether a career is right for you? You need to take stock of where you are today, including your qualifications, experience and your interests. What have you enjoyed or disliked in your studies? Remember to be honest! Match your findings with the results of your career research and look for possible matches. If you can, ask someone who is already in a career you are interested in and seek their views, or volunteer to get some work experience in a particular field. Remember to try and choose something you will enjoy – this will help you remain focused to achieve success in your chosen career.
